What Credit Score Do You Need for Truck Finance?

There's no single credit score cut-off for Australian truck finance; your score, ABN history and the deal itself all shape your approval and rate.

Low doc (no financials) up to $500k Funding from $20k–$10M+ 80+ lenders compared No long forms or paperwork

There is no universal credit score you need to qualify for truck finance in Australia, because lenders weigh your credit history alongside your ABN trading time, business financials and the asset itself. A strong score generally means better rates and full-doc access, while a patchier history can still be funded through low-doc or higher-risk lending pathways.

How Lenders Actually Read Your Score

Most Australian lenders pull your Equifax score, typically shown on a scale up to 1,200, and place you into a broad band such as excellent, very good, good, fair or below average. A higher score generally opens the door to sharper pricing and simpler documentation, but truck and trailer lenders also weigh your ABN history, industry, contracts and the asset itself, so the number is a starting point rather than the whole story.

There Is No Single Minimum Score

Unlike a personal loan with one fixed cut-off, commercial truck finance is assessed lender by lender, and because we compare 80+ banks and non-bank lenders, an applicant who doesn't fit one credit policy can often still fit another. Business turnover, time on ABN, existing debts and the strength of the freight or contract work behind the truck all factor in alongside your score.

Strong Credit Opens Up Full-Doc Options

If your credit history is clean and your financials are in good shape, full-doc truck and trailer finance may be available up to $10M+, usually with more competitive pricing and flexible terms of 1 to 7 years. Rates from 6.55% p.a. may be available for well-qualified applicants, though every rate quoted is indicative only and subject to lender criteria, credit assessment, fees, terms and approval.

Options If Your Score Isn't Perfect

A lower score, a short credit history, or a few blemishes doesn't automatically rule you out. Low-doc, lite-doc and no-doc pathways may be available up to $500,000 for eligible ABN holders, and higher-risk profiles can still potentially be funded, generally with rates moving up toward around 15% p.a. to reflect the added risk. No-deposit and up to 100% finance structures may also be considered depending on the deal, subject to approval.

What Improves Your Chances Beyond the Score

A solid deposit or trade-in, a longer ABN and GST registration history, clean recent conduct on existing facilities, and evidence of steady freight work all help offset a middling credit score. Lenders are ultimately assessing whether the truck will keep earning and the repayments will keep being met, so a well-prepared application often outweighs the score alone. The price of the truck or trailer itself varies widely depending on make, model, age and condition, and is just one factor lenders weigh alongside your credit profile.
