Is Truck Finance Tax Deductible?

Truck finance repayments aren't fully tax deductible, but the interest, depreciation and running costs usually are, depending on how the finance is structured.

Truck finance can offer real tax advantages for Australian businesses, but the deductions depend heavily on how the finance is structured. In most cases, it is not the full loan repayment that's deductible, but rather the interest, depreciation and running costs associated with the truck. Getting the structure right from the start matters, so it pays to understand the basics before you finance your next truck or trailer.

The Short Answer

The finance repayments themselves are not directly deductible, but the costs embedded in truck finance generally are. If you use a chattel mortgage, finance lease or similar business finance structure, you can typically claim interest charges, depreciation on the truck, and running costs, subject to how much the vehicle is used for business purposes. If you use a novated lease or finance the truck as a private asset, the tax treatment is different again.

Why It Depends On The Finance Structure

Different truck and trailer finance products are treated differently by the Australian Taxation Office. Under a chattel mortgage, the business usually owns the truck from day one and can claim depreciation on the asset plus the interest component of repayments, while a finance lease may allow the lease payments to be claimed as a business expense. Because the rules differ by structure and by how the arrangement is documented, it is worth confirming the setup with your accountant before you sign.

Interest, Not The Whole Repayment

A common misunderstanding is assuming the entire loan repayment is deductible. In most business finance structures, only the interest portion of each repayment is a tax deduction, while the principal reduces the loan balance and the asset itself is depreciated separately over its effective life. Interest rates on truck and trailer finance vary widely depending on the asset, term, deposit and your credit profile, from around 6.55% p.a. for well-qualified applicants up to around 15% p.a. for higher-risk applications, so any rate you're quoted is indicative only and subject to lender criteria, credit assessment, fees, terms and final approval.

Depreciation And The Instant Asset Write-Off

Trucks and trailers used in a business are generally depreciable assets, and depending on current thresholds and your business turnover, some or all of the purchase cost may be eligible for immediate or accelerated depreciation. What a given truck or trailer actually costs to buy varies widely depending on make, model, age, condition and configuration, so it's worth getting a firm price from your dealer or seller before calculating depreciation. These rules change from year to year, so always check current ATO thresholds and eligibility with your tax adviser before relying on them.

GST And Running Costs

If your business is registered for GST, you may be able to claim GST credits on the truck purchase and on ongoing costs like fuel, servicing, tyres, registration and insurance, in addition to claiming those running costs as tax deductions to the extent the vehicle is used for business.

Business Use Versus Private Use

Deductions are generally apportioned based on the percentage of business use, so a truck used exclusively for work is treated differently to one with mixed private and business kilometres. Keeping a logbook or clear records of business use helps support your claims and makes tax time considerably simpler.
